Shared Service Providers that were available in MOSS2007 have now been replaced in SP2010 with Service Applications. This allows you to scope services at a Web Application level in Central Administration. Some key changes to this architecture mean that you can pick and chose which service applications are available and also can share them across SharePoint farms. The services can also have appointed administrators.
