In WSS3.0 and MOSS2007 there was a capability to export as a Site Template (.stp) file. Site Templates have been deprecated in SPF2010 and SPS2010 and replaced with the ability to export a site as a Solution Package (wsp) which can then be imported into Visual Studio. This is extremely powerful as it allows Business Users to build up prototype sites and then for SharePoint Customizers and SharePoint Developers to take what was created and build on top of this...rather than in the WSS3.0/MOSS2007 life cycle where you have to build it all again from scratch. Or use tools such as Solution Generator or SPSource to reverse engineer Site Instances.
